RIP LeRoy Crume of Crume Brothers, Soul Stirrers

The Journal of Gospel Music is saddened to learn of the passing of LeRoy Crume. LeRoy was a member of Chicago’s Crume Brothers and the Soul Stirrers.  The Crume Brothers are credited for introducing the electric guitar into quartet music and many were members of the Soul Stirrers at one time or another.   OAKLAND, Calif. Texas Gospel Announcer Bill “The Mailman” Martin Dies

Yvonne Wesley-Seabrooks, president of the Chicago Area Gospel Announcers Guild, informed TBGB that Bill “The Mailman” Martin, gospel announcer and president of the Texas Chapter of the Gospel Announcers Guild, died in his sleep yesterday.   Born in Asheville, North Carolina and, at one time, a budding jazz saxophonist, Martin became Austin Texas’s most popular gospel radio personality.  He spun gospel on KIXL and most recently on “The Word,” KLGO 1490 AM.  Martin was a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, founded the Texas Gospel Announcers Guild, was a fixture at the annual Gospel Announcers Guild conventions, and ...

R.I.P. Edna Tatum

Tammy Taylor of One EnTiTy in Nashville reported that Lady Edna Tatum, “The Voice,” passed away. Taylor reported that Edna can be heard on Gospel Music Workshop of America recordings, as well as on Kurt Carr projects.  Gregory Gay of GOSPELflava.com noted that she can be heard introducing the choir on the Hawkins Family’s Love Alive V album. Joseph Middleton of the Golden Era Gospel Blog informed TBGB today that Hanq Neal, former member of the Pentecostal Ambassadors of Indianapolis and Donald Vails & the Choraleers, passed away this morning.
