We use the Bible for a roadmap, but what about using gospel music for a wedding?

As thoughts turn lovingly to, well, love this Valentine’s Day, and as planning for spring and summer weddings heats up, TBGB challenges its readers to suggest gospel songs appropriate for a wedding.

Make your comments in the “comments” section, and we’ll post the full list in an upcoming blog entry. Submit as many recommendations, and as often, as you wish. You will be helping many couples walk down the aisle in gospel music style!

Let’s get started. Here are some wedding-appropriate gospel songs, courtesy of TBGB:

“Amazing Grace” – without question

“As Long As There’s You” – The McClurkin Project (from We Praise You, GospoCentric 2007)

“Believe” – Brian Courtney Wilson (from Just Love, Spirit Rising Music/Music World Entertainment 2008)

“Dance With Me” – Phil Tarver (from Draw Nearer, Kingdom Records 2006)

“I Found Love (Cindy’s Song)” – BeBe Winans (from the CD Still, Malaco Records 2009)

“I Thee Wed” – Jay McGee – (from the CD I Hear Foot Steps , 2003)

“We’re Just Getting Started” – Kevin LeVar (2011 – available exclusively on iTunes)

“Perfect Love Song” – Anita Wilson (from the CD Worship Soul, EMI Gospel 2012)

“One” – Tim Dillinger and Reba Rambo-McGuire (from the CD The Baton: 1985, Suxxess Records, 2013)

“So Easy to Love” – Calvin Bridges (available on iTunes, 2013)

Herman Williams offered these suggestions:

– The songs of Phil and Brenda Nicholas

– “God in My Corner” – Connail Johnson (from the CD I Heard the Voice, Marlee Records 1997)

This is a very good idea. I hear too many secular songs being sung in churches at weddings. Oftentimes, the people getting married are active in the church. Why wouldn’t they want to use spiritual songs? I believe it is because many of them are still being too heavily influenced by the world and secular music and videos. It is like God is occupying a room in their house, but not all of their house. They had better fix this because a “house is not a home,” (Pardon me, I just couldn’t resist the reference to a Luther Vandross song I hear at weddings) without Jesus all over it!

    I will think on this!

    “Stand By Me”
In the midst of faults and failures.
When I do the best I can,
    And my friends misunderstand,
Thou who knowest all about me,
    Stand By Me.

One of the best – and least frequently sung – gospel songs for a wedding is “Make Us One” by Philip Bailey (of Earth Wind and Fire). It is a song on one of his albums from the late 1980’s, maybe “The Wonders of His Love”. Another great wedding song is “This Day” by Edwin Hawkins (sung by both Jennifer Holiday and Whitney Houston).

I am getting married November 2011 and am searching for two perfect gospel wedding songs, one for my bridal party to enter to and one for myself. I am having a really difficult time and don’t want to get discouraged and switch over to secular music, as our wedding is being held in the house of the Lord. Please continue to post suggestions for wedding songs. Thanks everyone.

Beautiful To Me by Darwin Hobbs is a great song. I’m getting married in June 2011 and am having a tough time finding a few good songs

I was married 5 years ago and used all gospel songs for my wedding. The bridal party walked to What It Means to Love by Kirk Franklin, I walked to Seasons by Donald Lawrence, the unity candle was lit to The Prayer by Donnie McClurkin and Yolanda Adams, and to complete the ceremony we had a dance performed to the song I Am Grateful by Hezekiah Walker. The ceremony was so spirit filled because we honored God in every aspect. Be blessed!

This has been so helpful as I try to plan a spirit-filled wedding in which God gets all the glory. One song I found in my searching which is nice (that’s not yet listed) is You Are My Ministry from TD Jakes’ CD (Shirley Murdock)…

Danni, I wonder if the song you heard on the radio was BeBe Winans’ “I Found Love”?

  27. Danni December 4, 2011 at 11:07 pm - Reply

I dont think it was that song. It had finally all through out the song. I heard it on the radio on 11-16-2011 on the gospel station in atlanta with the co-co brother. I have emaied him and called the radio station as well.

  28. Bob Marovich December 4, 2011 at 11:40 pm - Reply

Yeah, that wouldn’t be “I Found Love.” I’m sure either the station or Coco Brother’s producers can get you the information. Feel free to share it with this list when you find out!

Thank you for compiling this list!

The reason so many “secular” songs are being played at Christian weddings is because many of the faith are SORELY uptight about romantic love and the display of it (despite the beautifully written and dare I say, erotic Song of Solomon). Therefore, there is a shortage of songs that celebrate Eros love in the Gospel/Christian music genre. Most of us would prefer a healthy mix of both spiritual and secular (I couldn’t see myself dancing cheek to cheek with my new hubby to Amazing Grace. Sorry!)

Folks, not all secular music is of the devil, but that is another debate for another day.

    Be blessed!

I have been living in Italy for almost 20 years. I was amazed to see that in most of the Churches these very secular songs are not allowed… Hence people turn to Gospel >> I do Antonio & Maria’s prayer, ( i arranged) One Hand One Heart. it is a prayer for Oneness. Leon Patillo’s – Flesh of My Flesh. Andrae Crouch wrote many appropriate songs: All that I Have, All I Can Say &To God Be The Glory, to Name a Few.
Kirk Franklin wrote, Real Love and My Life, My Love, My All. Give God priority in the ceremony.

As a musician, I will never forget playing a requested song by the couple, I Know I’ll Never Love this way again. The words are: You looked inside my fantasies and made each one come true
Something no one else had ever found a way to do
I’ve kept the memories one by one, since you took me in
And I know I’ll never love this way again

I know I’ll never love this way again
So I keep holdin’ on before the good is gone
I know I’ll never love this way again
Hold on, hold on, hold on

A fool will lose tomorrow reaching back for yesterday
I won’t turn my head in sorrow if you should go away
I’ll stand here and remember just how good it’s been
And I know I’ll never love this way again

I know I’ll never love this way again
So I keep holdin’ on before the good is gone
I know I’ll never love this way again
Hold on, hold on, hold on

I hope that the couple made it..
