RIP Shea Norman, Gospel Singer

JGM was saddened to learn of the passing of gospel singer Shea Norman of Memphis.  The gospel singer passed away Thursday at age 45 as a result of diabetes. Reported the Memphis Commercial Appeal: “Norman, whose real name was Alen VonShea Norman, began a career in gospel music in 2004. His album, My Heart Depends On You, put him on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart at No. 17. Joe Ligon of the Mighty Clouds of Joy Passes Away: Homegoing Details Announced

By Bob Marovich (UPDATED 12/17/16) Gospel quartet legend Willie Joe Ligon passed away on Sunday, December 11. Homegoing and memorial details are at the bottom of this report. Rickey Grundy, Celebrated Gospel Choir Leader, Dead at 56

Mr. J. Matthew Cobb of HiFi Magazine informed the Journal of Gospel Music that Rickey Grundy, leader of the Rickey Grundy Chorale; a musician; and a composer and arranger of dozens of popular gospel songs, died in Los Angeles, California, today, July 27, at the age of 56. Grundy not only recorded with his own Rickey Grundy Chorale, but he also served as a session musician for many gospel artists and was a popular workshop presenter and music coach.   Many albums from the latter part of the golden era of gospel choir recording (1960-1990) benefited from his contributions. Detroit Gospel Singer Ernis Hurskin Dies

David Jones informed the Journal of Gospel Music yesterday that Detroit gospel singer Ernis A. Hurskin has died. Hurskin was one of gospel’s celebrated male soprano singers.  He was a member and lead singer of several nationally-known aggregations, including the (James) Cleveland Singers, the Voices of Tabernacle, the Thomas Whitfield Singers, and Dr. E. LaQuint Weaver & the Hallelujah Singers. Chief Apostle William L. Bonner Dies at 93
