“Greater is Coming”
Jekalyn Carr
Lunjeal Music Group (2012)
Those who have seen Rejoice & Shout, Don McGlynn’s 2011 documentary on the history of gospel music, will remember the young girl who sings “Amazing Grace” unaccompanied.  She brims with conviction, sandwiched among the adult female singers and impishly-grinning toddlers, her focus is in the ether, lost in the hymn.
The young girl is Jekalyn Carr.
Now fifteen and a young lady, Carr is a singer and youth motivational speaker.  Her “Greater Is Coming” articulates what people two and three times her age are feeling in this time of uncertainty.  The “shaking,” “beating,” and “pressing” of life is not for naught, she sings.  It is preparation for greater things to come.  No pain, no gain.
What’s most impressive about the single is Carr’s improvisational fervor, neither underplayed nor overdone, a delicate balancing act that belies her years. “Greater Is Coming” is the first single from Jekalyn Carr’s album, slated for release later this year.
