“Jesus Took Care of Me”
Prodigy
From Never Let Go (2013)
On “Jesus Took Care of Me,” Prodigy’s Bruce Smith sings, “Where I’m from, down in the country, we didn’t have no instruments, but everyone once in a while, you could hear a tambourine, and way down the road, they would clap and stomp.”
Today, Prodigy has instruments, but listeners are sure to clap and stomp anyway to this “down in the country” track from the Columbus, Georgia quartet’s new album, Never Let Go.
During the song’s vamp, Smith thanks God for his life, health, strength, house, car, and “everything you’ve done in my life.”  The familiar quartet backbeat, made especially prominent by Albert Carter’s pounding drums, and the quartet’s call-and-response, put a fine point on the message.
