Chicago, IL, May 23, 2017: Chicago Gospel Music Legend Bishop Willie A. Treadwell, 86, transitioned from this world Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Generations at Oakton Place in Des Plaines, IL.
He was born in Anniston, AL. on February 28, 1931, to the late David and Limmer-Jane Treadwell. Bishop Treadwell was drafted into the United States Army in 1952 where we fought in the Korean War.
On April 9, 1955, Bishop Treadwell founded the Treadwell Community Singers with Frankie Marie Powell (Treadwell). During this time Bishop Treadwell served in ministry under the leadership of the late Pastor Governor Powell of Garfield Park Missionary Baptist Church of Chicago, IL. He was blessed to unite in matrimony to a wonderful, God-fearing woman, the late Mother Frankie Marie Treadwell, on April 28, 1956. In April 1971, Bishop Treadwell organized the United Faith Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Pastor.
The Treadwell Community Singers was the first chorale group to be presented on the award-winning Jubilee Showcase telecast. The choir went on to record their first album in 1958 entitled God’s Crowd and won several awards leading them to be signed to Checker Records (Universal Records). The Treadwell Community Singers directly influenced gospel music in Chicago and touched the lives of hundreds of people throughout the Midwest. In 2010, Bishop Treadwell was honored with a Living Legend Award by Gospel Music According to Chicago.
During Bishop Treadwell’s life, he was very active in the NAACP, founded a number of community organizations, such as I Am Brotherhood and The Treadwell Foundation. He actively organized community feedings and toy giveaways in the Austin Community. Bishop Treadwell’s love and memories will forever be cherished by his children, extended family, and friends.

This is my grandfather. He truly was an amazing soul. I only pray that I can carry the mantle he left behind. I pray that my music touches people the way his did. Miss you grandad.
P.S.
Thanks for this article.
You are most welcome. Your grandfather truly was a treasure!
I met Rev. Treadwell in Las Vegas, NV. He use to minister to me long distance. We ended up losing contact, but I will forever cherish the conversations we had and his mentoring. I am just hearing of his passing 😢
