“Been Good”
Lil Prince & Company
Independent (release date: September 17, 2018)
By Robert M. Marovich
The son of gospel quartet legend Milbert “Doc” McKenzie, Lil Prince formed his own group, Lil Prince & Company, in 2017. The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree: Lil Prince’s group sings in the tradition of his father’s Gospel Hi-Lites.
An example is their single, “Been Good.” It borrows its melody from the timeless congregational songs raised by the Rev. C. J. Johnson while bounding along to a medium tempo. The uncomplicated message about God’s goodness is so timeless that although “Been Good” was recorded and released more than five years ago, it is still being promoted to radio. It fits snugly in the style of quartet singing on gospel radio today.
