“No Weapon”
Calvin Bridges
PNEUMA/Spirit Recordings (release date: February 9, 2024)

By Robert M. Marovich

“No Weapon,” the latest single from Chicago’s indefatigable singer-songwriter-director Calvin Bridges, puts a Hawkins-meets-GMWA-Chapter-Choir touch to Isaiah 54:17. The song’s easy bounce, propelled by funky bass slaps, voices the defiant confidence of the message.

Perhaps best known as the writer of the evergreen “I Can Go to God in Prayer,” Bridges recorded “No Weapon” at the Malcolm X College Auditorium in Chicago. His group was the International Gospel Music Conference Mass Choir, a group comprised of American and European singers, special guests from Stockholm, Sweden. They sing, they swing, they deliver the goods.
