With “Yes Lord, Yes,” drummer, singer, and songwriter Marcus “Elder Mac” McFarlin sets a straightforward declaration of thanksgiving and discipleship to a simple melody, a mostly acoustic guitar-driven rhythm, and thumps of bass that keep a steady beat.
The line, “It ain’t been no walk in the park / But you’ve been there right from the start,” sums up McFarlin’s faith and gratitude. What really sells the song is the singer’s frictionless tenor, which navigates the song’s tessitura with translucent clarity. The occasional orbits of space-age synth, like comets crossing the sky, are unnecessary, but that’s my only quibble in an otherwise penetrating performance from this Milwaukee, Wisconsin, gospel artist.
