“Keep Trying”

Angelia Robinson grooved on a variety of musical styles while growing up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC. “Keep Trying,” her single about the trials of self-transformation, reflects her musical eclecticism in its echoes of modern R&B and jazz.
When Robinson sings that she cannot seem to change the downward cycle of her life and cries out in a tear-stained alto, “I think I’m going insane,” I was reminded of that oft-quoted comment of questionable attribution: insanity is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting different results. Not clinically diagnosable insanity, of course, but rather the disarming feelings of powerlessness and hopelessness. That is why when Robinson “calls His name,” she has changed her static methodology by relying on a heavenly power for earthly relief.
By the end of the song, it is unclear whether Robinson is healed completely. If not, she is surely on her way.
