“Breaking Free” is a breezy R&B-infused testament to the power of change.

Vannessa Forbes, a 20-year-old gospel singer from Jamaica (not all music from Jamaica is reggae!), tells the listener in a breathy, attractive voice how she gazed in the mirror and did not like what she saw. So she broke the shackles on her old life and embraced the new, remembering that “my father’s a king, which means that I am royalty.”

A member of the Pentecostal Gospel Showers and a praise and worship leader, Forbes cites Karen Clark, Shirley Caesar, Mahalia Jackson, Mali Music, Nikki Ross, and Amber Bullock as her music inspirations. 

Clocking in at nearly six minutes, “Breaking Free” could use a solid radio edit. Otherwise, it is a smooth, contemporary inspirational piece that evokes the work of indie artists such as Alkendria, Marjane, and Avery Sunshine. It is also, incidentally, the title track of Forbes’ forthcoming album, still in the works. Hear for yourself below:
