Hello, everyone!

This is a monthly reminder that “Gospel Memories,” now in its fifth season, broadcasts again on Sunday, July 3 from 2:00 to 6:30 a.m. Central Time US on Chicago’s WLUW 88.7 FM. You can listen to the broadcast on the web at www.wluw.org. Just click “Listen Live,” and you’ll have the show coming out of your computer speakers.

Highlights of the July 3 Broadcast:

— Words and music with Gene Viale, former member of the (James) Cleveland Singers who also performed with the Caravans and recorded solo LPs in the 60s and 70s. Brother Gene has a new CD project out called A Light to This World.

— New releases of classic gospel from Acrobat Records: the Swan Silvertones’ King sessions and Mahalia Jackson’s “lost” Apollo recordings; and Shanachie Records: gospel historian and writer Tony Heilbut’s recently produced CDs on the legendary Marion Williams, and a compilation of pioneering tracks called When Gospel Was Gospel.

— A musical salute to Rev. Clay Evans on his recent 80th birthday. Rev. Evans, of Fellowship MB Church on Chicago’s South Side, was a member of the Lux Singers, a civil rights leader, and his church has been home to some of gospel music’s most popular gospel artists. We’ll hear some of Rev. Evans and The Ship’s recordings from on down the years.

— As we do every July, we’ll feature a patriotic song or two rendered by gospel legends.

Preacher Feature: Rev. L.E. Cauley of Buffalo, NY (“A Greater than Jonah is Here”) – 1960s

— And other golden gospel goodies, including:

Israelite Travelers, featuring future RnB artist Gene Allison

Rev. Maceo Woods and his Christian Tabernacle Choir, feat. Doris Sykes
