Judy Cheeks
From the CD True Love is Free
To the pastoral sound of birds chirping, subtly humming voices, and a prominent piano, Judy Cheeks expresses a simple message of gratitude to God for the brand new day.
The wide-open arrangement—evocative of R. Kelly’s mellow retro productions—allows Cheeks to stretch her soulful vocal muscles, evincing her gospel roots (her father was quartet star Julius “June” Cheeks) and R&B training (she was a dance music icon for three decades). “You gave me a new song, thank you Lord,” Cheeks exclaims, heralding her recent return to gospel music.
I was waiting for a big production ending, but instead, Cheeks gives it a delicate old-school soul conclusion. Impressive vocal work from start to finish.
