The Canton Spirituals put Canton, Mississippi, on the map when Harvey Watkins Sr. organized the quartet in 1946. Their 1995 Live In Memphis (Blackberry) sold a half-million copies, and they show no signs of slowing down.
On “Keep Knocking,” the Canton Spirituals identify Jesus not only as a way maker but also as a fight fixer.
Opening with a quick rap on the door, the quartet’s latest single features the strutting backbeat and repetitive vamp characteristic of Deep South quartet singing. Harvey Jr. warns that life’s fight will be tough, but blessings are on their way. Looking for a home, a job, or healing from illness? Never fear: “The fight is fixed—and you’re gonna win.”
