One 4 Christ is a full-throated Chicago-based choir of nearly fifty voices. Founded by Sharon R. Bouie and under the musical direction of Derral J. AndersonJr., the ensemble toggles between worship team and old-school church wrecker on its new album, In True Worship.
Recorded live at St. Mark M.B. Church in Harvey, Illinois, the CD opens with “Use Me As You Please,” an a cappella “wooden church” congregational song led by Anthony Hardin. The audience responds with delight when the choir tosses in a couple of doo-wop vocal blows.
From there, One 4 Christ turns to conventional energetic P&W material sung at 93 octane in the style of two other Chicago groups, Kenny Lewis and One Voice and Malcolm Williams and Great Faith. The title track, on the other hand, is slow and easy, hymnic in structure and quality, and has a touching melody sung lovingly by Zorriante Brown. It has the potential to be added to the repertories of other gospel choirs, praise teams, and small ensembles. “Trusting You,” a song about becoming a disciple no matter the cost, is given an equally compelling reading by Dawn Jordan.
It is when One 4 Christ embraces its inner Chicago churchiness that the album really spins. “Shall Be So,” led by the incendiary Evangelist Chrysann Moore, is a Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Warriors-style rocker. “Blessed” is another hand clapper, a workout reminiscent of the Tommies at full force. Minister Tim White, an energetic and underappreciated gospel soloist, leads “Steadfast.” This contemporary twist to the romping, stomping gospel choir fits the group best.
Formed in 2004, One 4 Christ debuted on record with its 2010 release, God Can Still Use You.
