Bishop G.E. Patterson, Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ who was elected to a second term this past November, has given everyone who loves traditional gospel music a beautiful gift: Bishop G.E. Patterson & Congregation Singing The Old Time Way.
This is a wonderful, wonderful project, a COGIC Greatest Hits. Recorded live in Memphis, Tennessee — COGIC world headquarters — the two-disc package presents more than 40 classic gospel songs and hymns sung, as many gospel artists like to say, “the way they used to be sung in our church back home.” The energetic, passionate singing by Patterson and his congregation is supported by a strong backbeat and guitar riffs that sound as if they’ve been pulled straight from the Bill Haley and the Comets’ songbook.
In addition to sanctified singing, other elements of an anointed service are captured on this project, as well, including speaking in tongues, the “Yes Lord” chant, and plenty of reminicences and messages by Patterson. The CD booklet includes the lyrics to these songs, which is a wonderful surprise and welcomed addition. Given the number of people who write me looking for the words to some of these old gospel chestnuts, the inclusion of lyrics was a great decision.
My personal favorite is the simple, catchy “When the Fire Fell,” during which Bishop Patterson asks the members present to stand when the day of the week on which they were saved is announced in the song. By the end of the song, everyone is standing and singing heartily.
You have got to get this CD. It’s absolutely amazing and a breath of fresh air. It speeds the blood and gets the hands to clapping and the feet to stomping. If you play it in your car, however, be sure to keep an eye on your speedometer!
The CD is on Memphis’ Podium Records. Call Podium at 901/345-1102, extension 114 for more information.
