“Rise”
The Sounds of Blackness

NAACP Image Award-winners The Sounds of Blackness follow their optimistic anthem “Fly Again” with “Rise,” another optimistic selection, and the second single, from their eponymously-titled CD.

Like Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” “Rise” opens with a swirl of funk/soul and a cacophony of voices. It then settles into a laidback groove as the ensemble serves as life coach, instructing listeners to rise above the negativity and “give yourself a second chance.” Christian steppers will dig the line-danceable rhythm.
