Robbie Baxter
Soft Tones of Worship (2012)
By Bob Marovich for The Black Gospel Blog
Bishop Robbie Baxter’s new CD, Soft Tones of Worship is inspirational jazz, a mellow, meditative album designed for prayer and worship.  It has already garnered praise from pastors in Orlando, where Robbie Baxter Ministries is located.
The combo featured on the album consists of Paul Brandenburgon sax and Robbie Baxter on keys.  Selections such as “Heart” and “Softly” are dominated by Brandenburg’s alternately fiery and creamy sax, while “Yes To Your Will” is driven by Baxter’s delicate, melodic piano.  In keeping with the CD’s mission, even the brisk tempo pieces are unapologetically low-key.
The violin-infused “Interlude of Worship” and “We Can Make It” are deeply meditative and new age-y, evoking the sweet melodicism of Norwegian-Irish combo Secret Garden (whose original version of “You Raise Me Up” has been thoroughly gospelized over the years).
While Soft Tones of Worship is basically an instrumental album, Baxter’s son Drew and a female backup group lend vocals to “King of All Time.”  The song is a paean to God as the hero who saved his life.  And as is specific to instrumental inspirational jazz, the linkage between title and arrangement is left up to the listener’s imagination.

Soft Tones of Worship is a nicely produced album of cool down tracks and guaranteed to slow the heart and quiet the mind.
Three of Five Stars
Pick: “We Can Make It.”
