Vadia
From Vadia’s Mixtape Vol. 1 (2013)
Vadia Rhodes, aka Vadia, gives Joe Cocker’s already gospelized version of the Beatles classic an inspirational lyric to boot.
The Sacramento, California-based singer and her father, Pastor Essex Hubbard, raise the gospel temperature towards the end with a shouting duet on Jesus, the friend who will never leave or forsake you. Hubbard quotes John 15:13 (“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends”) to give the song a biblical context.
“A Little Help From My Friend” is on Vadia’s Mixtape Vol. 1, a five-track EP of love songs re-purposed with inspirational messages. “Friend” and an cover of Bill Withers’ “Use Me Up” that converts love into discipleship, are the most lyrically effective and vocally demonstrative of the five.
