From the Ashro Music & Media CD Testify
Chicago Mass Choir alumna and powerhouse vocalist Lemmie Battles shows what she’s made of, in more ways than one, on the testimony-laden “Only the Grace.”
Steeped in the churchy Chicago sound that spawned the Argo Singers and Caravans, Battles channels ‘Vans leader Albertina Walker with her downhome reading and evangelizing on this mid-tempo selection.
She sings, “When the doctor walked away from my bed, I tell you, the grace of God is how I made it this far,” then adds, “Some of you know my story, how cancer did me three times, not one time, but three times. Again it was the grace of God! No more cancer, no more chemo!” No amen necessary.
