“Shine On Me”
Eddie Ruth Bradford
From the album Blessed to be a Blessing
Clarksdale, Mississippi is known for its blues legacy, but it also has a gospel heritage.  That heritage is upheld today by Eddie Ruth Bradford, the smoky-voiced contralto whose traditionalist stance evokes the no-nonsense delivery of a young Sallie Martin.

On the brief, uptempo “Shine On Me,” Bradford and a male quartet are overjoyed that the Lord made the sun to shine on them.  As such, it answers the lyric line in Margaret Pleasant Douroux’s “I’m Glad,” sung by Rev. James Cleveland: “I’m glad man didn’t make sunshine, ‘cause he may not let it shine on me.”
