Those who know Zacardi Cortez only from his intense vocalizing on James Fortune & FIYA’s “The Blood” will be surprised to hear his rich, balladeer side. Like “Every Promise,” Cortez’s duet with Lalah Hathaway, ”1 On 1” is a beautiful song. Accompanied by piano, Cortez seeks some alone time “with you.” He sings: “I might be selfish, but I just can’t help it/When it comes down to you.”
Cortez explains the song’s meaning as “about spending one on one time with God. We all go through those times when we just have to put everything else aside—turn off the TV, put the video game down, stop taking phone calls—and just concentrate on our relationship. It can be your relationship with your girlfriend, your child, or God. We all need that one on one time with the ones we love to let them know that we do love them….”
“1 On 1” is the first single from Kerry Douglas Presents Gospel Mix Vol. VI. It is definitely a candidate for TBGB’s Best Singles of 2013.
