Ethan Kent
Tonic Blueprint (2013)
You’ve heard the saying that everyone wants to go to Heaven but nobody wants to die to get there.
Listening to Ethan Kent’s new single, “My Hope Is In Glory,” one is inclined to reconsider that notion. Kent and a collection of indie gospel artists, including Drea Randle and Niya Cotton, look forward to flying away from this cold, alienating world that “is not my home” to the place where “we never grow old” and the “streets are made of gold.” To this list of familiar superlatives, they identify loved ones they will meet there on that day.
Not that they want to go this minute, mind you, but on “one of these future days.” Nevertheless, when accompanied by a finger-popping rhythm and swatches of retro soul, the ensemble certainly makes the journey seem less threatening. “That Awful Day Will Surely Come” it is not.
