Tre’ Thomas

Finally

Enrycht Productions (2012)
By Bob Marovich for The Black Gospel Blog.

You may know Tre’ Thomas from his 2008 debut CD, A Natural Contrast, or as the man with the soothing voice on Bonnerfide Radio’s weekly Monday evening show, LoveLudes, where he dishes up helpings of “love music and love conversation.”

If so, you will enjoy Finally, an album’s worth of inspirational love/worship songs rendered by Thomas to the Most High.

The New Orleans-born Thomas opens his sophomore offering with an extended introduction by Gerard Bonner of Bonnerfide Radio. Bonner sets the stage for the singer to explain his artistic goal: “to go out into the world and bring people inside.” By “world,” he means using the beats and melodies of urban AC. By “inside,” he means inside the spiritual body of Christ.
Thomas wants to sing about the love “that the walls of the ‘church’ cannot confine.”  That’s what Finally is: a handful of selections about love wrapped in a gentle, calm, “quiet storm” kind of feeling. The songs reinforce Thomas’s objective to “further break down the walls separating gospel and secular music” because the music blurs the lines between the sacred and secular, and the lyrics blur the lines between human love and agape. Thus, the casual listener might think the songs are expressions of affection to a beloved, and that is not an inaccurate interpretation, but a closer listening identifies that the aim of Thomas’s poetry is God.
The most musically interesting track on the album is the “Love Medley.” It is a nearly seven-minute prayer set to music during which Thomas ratchets up the emotional temperature by singing and praising with passion.

If you find that the album sounds different from other gospel CDs, Tre’ Thomas has done his job.

Three of Five Stars
