I first met Pastor Mack C. Mason more than a decade ago.
Our mutual appreciation for traditional gospel music brought us together for lunch in Chicago’s Loop. At that lunch, Pastor Mack not only gave me great advice, but I took it. He suggested I join the Chicago Area Gospel Announcers Guild. I did. The Guild helped inspire The Black Gospel Blog, which is now the Journal of Gospel Music. The Guild also introduced me to so many of you reading this right now.
At that first meeting, Pastor Mack said prophetically, “Something good is going to come out of this lunch.” It certainly has for me, I assure you, and I hope it has for First Lady Traci and him, too.
I thank Pastor Mack Mason for his wisdom and friendship over the years, and for his many contributions to the history of gospel music in Chicago, in the Church of God in Christ, and elsewhere.
He now pastors his grandfather’s church, Greater Prayer Garden COGIC on Chicago’s South Side, and heads the Bishop C. H. Mason Historical Society.

August marks Pastor Mack’s 38th year on Chicago Radio. His “Urban Unction Radio Broadcast,” an all-new Sunday Morning Music and Ministry Show, moves to a new time: Sunday morning at 9:00 AM, and Tuesdays at 12 Noon, on WBGX AM 1570.
Congratulations, Pastor Mack C. Mason, on another milestone. May you have many more to come!
