“Heaven”
Joshua Tomlinson
Independent (release date: May 10, 2024)

By Robert M. Marovich

If you can sing a solo a cappella and crush it, you can sing.

That’s what tenor-voiced Joshua Tomlinson does at the opening of “Heaven,” a gentle evocation of the hereafter. The background voices exhale cooing harmonies like a choir of angels.

Tomlinson’s second single focuses on the conviction required, as well as the costs incurred, to achieve eternal life. “Heaven” is earnest and lovely sentiments as well as in melody and arrangement, with beats produced by Jakes Angel Beats. The a cappella open is a refreshing change from today’s trend toward musically bombastic gospel intros.
