“Grateful Melody”
Cortez Lake
Independent (release date: August 4, 2024)
By Robert M. Marovich
There’s a full day’s dose of vitamin D in Chicago singer Cortez Lake’s “Grateful Melody.”
In a versatile voice that oozes pop sensibility, Lake sings his gratitude to God for the basic things in his life, including laughter, rain, butterflies, birds, sunshine, coffee (amen!) and most of all, music. The melody, arrangement, and retro soul groove of this simple song are as buoyant as the message. It bears comparison to the breezy work of John Legend and Pharrell Williams.
