“Working On Me”
Zacardi Cortez
From the Blacksmoke Music Worldwide album Ibhar: The Journey (Chapter 2)
(album release date: November 14, 2025)
By Robert M. Marovich
Zacardi Cortez shouts and squalls like a seasoned quartet lead through the confessional “Working on Me” as he pleads to God for a “brand new start” through spiritual restoration.
Cortez then turns to the listeners. “He’s not through with me yet,” he declares on this selection which he co-wrote with Christopher Conway and producer Morgan Turner for Blacksmoke Worldwide CEO Kerry Douglas. Some choices “only led to mistakes,” Cortez adds, noting that it’s his testimony, too. He’s a work-in-progress, so “don’t throw me away.”
Although Zacardi Cortez made his name with his 2012 debut solo album The Introduction, the gospel community already knew who he was from his incendiary leads on James Fortune & FIYA’s “The Blood” (2008) and “I Believe” (2010).
