“99 and ½ Won’t Do”
Bobby Rush, Blind Boys of Alabama, Dom Flemons, and Dustbowl Revival
72MM Records (release date: July 19, 2024)
By Robert M. Marovich
Bluesman Bobby Rush and the Blind Boys of Alabama never give their fans less than 100 percent, so it’s natural that their first recorded collaboration would be on the Original Gospel Harmonettes’ signature song, “99 and ½ Won’t Do.”
With folk-rockers Dustbowl Revival and Americana artist Dom Flemons, the GRAMMY-winning Rush and Blind Boys blend the blues, gospel, folk, and country into a chugging workout that sounds as authentic as Georgia red clay. It’s a entertaining gospel song with a memorable title that has become something of a church aphorism. The message is about the importance of spiritual discipline, energy, and focus and, not surprisingly, the artists bring discipline, focus, and plenty of energy to the recording, as well.
Proceeds from the single, available digitally as well as on a 7-inch Record Store Day single, will support the Mid-South Food Bank in Memphis, Tennessee.
