“It’s In Your Praise”
Lamont McCoy
David’s Dance Music (release date: December 31, 2024)
By Robert M. Marovich
In gospel’s classic “rocking chair” triple meter, “It’s In Your Praise” features a full-throated choir supporting a bluesy melismatic Elder Lamont McCoy as lead vocalist. Together they hammer home the message that you can find all you need in a good God praise. The recording is reminiscent of the soulful gospel choirs of the 1980s that layered contemporary sounds on a traditional gospel music foundation.
If you, like I, hear more than a little of that animated Detroit gospel choir style in McCoy’s song, it’s worth nothing that he studied under the late Dr. Mattie Moss Clark and sang with her Southwest Jurisdictional Mass Choir. McCoy wrote “It’s In Your Praise” with recent JGM Pick of the Week recipient Ernest J. Lee.
