The New C Lord Cs
Independent (release date: August 4, 2023)
By Robert M. Marovich
“What Is This I Got? Holy Ghost” proves that although the New C Lord Cs has new personnel, its sound is consistent with its roots in traditional gospel quartet going back to 1954.
To a strutting mid-tempo backbeat emblematic of gospel quartets, lead singer Pastor Kenneth Day Sr. shouts and squalls questions like “What is this I got / That makes me shake and tremble?” The rest of the quartet answers, “Must be the Holy Ghost.”
Originally known as the Starlight Gospel Singers and formed in Coconut Grove, Florida, the now Miami-based group changed its name to the C Lord Cs sometime between the mid-1950s and early 1960s, during the longstanding tenure of George Dawson.
The group’s name stands for “In Christ Our LORD, we are ChristianS. Solid quartet material.
