“The Promise”
Mississippi Mass Choir feat. Stan Jones and Myron Butler
Malaco Music Group (release date: April 7, 2023)
By Robert M. Marovich
The Mississippi Mass Choir’s first single in a decade, “The Promise” has more of a modern sound than we’re used to from a group best known for combining the intensity of quartet singing with the full-throated sound of a church-wrecking community choir.
The song, about the anticipation of watching God move in one’s life, is driven by animated vocals by Stan Jones and Myron Butler, and the relentless tempo fueled by an insistent rhythm section. While not as heart-stopping as MMC hits like “Your Grace and Mercy” and “When I Rose This Morning,” its continuous spirited motion will captivate its share of enthusiasts.
