JGM Pick of the Week: August 17, 2020

“Never Leave You Alone” Supreme Angels (release date: 2020) By Bob Marovich The latest iteration of the Supreme Angels continues the quartet’s music ministry into its eighth decade. Its new single, “Never Leave You Alone,” features the Angels’ characteristic hard gospel lead singing, a message of hope and encouragement, and that devastating “rocking chair” rhythm. Written by Jontee Ruffin, “Never Leave You Alone” is produced by Johnny Ruffin Jr. Originally known as the Paramounts, the Supreme Angels was organized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1958, the quartet became a national recording artist when it signed with Nashboro Records. Until 2007, when ...

Danny Gokey: A Career that God Built

By Bob Marovich Twenty-seven-year-old Sophia Martinez Gokey was a big fan of American Idol. She taped the program so her husband Danny Gokey, also an enthusiast of the singing competition, could watch it after he returned home from work. Sophia eventually encouraged Danny to audition for the show and, in his final year of age eligibility for the program, Danny decided to go for it. But on July 9, 2008, four weeks before the American Idol audition was to take place in Kansas City, Sophia passed away. “It was tragic. It was heartbreaking,” Danny told the Journal of Gospel Music. ...

Pastor Marlon Lock – Unleashed (EP)

Pastor Marlon Lock Unleashed (2016) www.pastormarlonlock.com By Bob Marovich “You Covered Me,” a single from Stellar Award-nominated Pastor Marlon Lock of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, made JGM’s Pick of the Week last June. It appears on his EP, Unleashed, a collection of seven cuts that showcase Lock’s urban adult contemporary approach to mostly introspective songs and stories about one’s relationship with God. While I am a proponent of hiring a group of musicians versus having the computer do it all, the electronically engineered low-key accompaniment for most of the selections seems to fit the album’s confessional vibe. The lead track and single, ...

The new album contains ten radio-sized and pleasantly rendered pieces by Stephenson, a Johnson Creek, Wisconsin-based artist whose songwriting technique suggests he is an astute student of the pop song. Indeed, as a youth, Stephenson spent a great deal of time listening to Top 40 radio, and it shows.  The self-professed “Pop Gospel Musician-ary” links lyrics of faith and gratitude ...

Darrell Hines II Puts God First

By Bob Marovich “Bringing talented people together and finding their strong points and making beautiful songs” is the mantra of producer and record label owner Darrell Hines II. His ensemble REVERB’s debut single, the acoustic-flavored “God First,” is impacting gospel radio. “I’ve been immersed in music all of my life,” Hines told the Journal of Gospel Music. “I didn’t get the gift of singing, but I got the love of music. It was just a matter of how I would fit in.” Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Hines comes from a long lineage of pastors. As a child, he ...
