Lorenza Brown Porter confirmed to TBGB this morning that Rebecca Nixon, a longtime member of gospel recording group the Argo Singers, passed away last week after an illness.
Nixon first appeared on record with the Argo Singers for their sole Specialty session in 1958, leading “Bring Back Those Days.” In a rich, robust alto, Nixon also led “His Eye is on the Sparrow” and “Fill Me Now” on Vee Jay. She was still singing with the group, which included members Porter and Shirley Wahls, in the 1990s and 2000s.
Ms. Nixon’s Homegoing Service will take place at Antioch Baptist Church, 6248 South Stewart, Chicago, on Thursday, November 21 at 10:00 a.m. For more information, contact Antioch Baptist Church at (773) 873-4433.
