The Caravans
DNMG and Soul Centered Music Group
After the recent passing of longtime members Albertina Walker and Inez Andrews, the Caravans would not be expected to release new music. However, in 2010, Walker and Andrews along with Delores Washington and Dorothy Norwood recorded the traditional gospel, “My Soul Says Yes.”
The single is seeing the light of day for the first time, courtesy of Soul Centered Music Group and Dorothy Norwood Music Group.
The Caravans sing the emotionally-fueled “My Soul Says Yes” backed by a choir; Walker and Norwood lead the verses. The classic 12/8 rocking chair tempo and flowery Roberta Martin-esque keyboard fills venerates the performance as the group puts its coda on a singing career spanning more than six decades.
It is particularly touching, from today’s vantage point, to hear Walker sing “no matter where I am, long as I can make it to the Promised Land, my very soul says yes.”
