Michael Nelson
From the Vee Kay Music CD Nikao!
TBGB first reviewed Michael Nelson in July 2011. More than a year later, the singer-songwriter is still abiding by the principle of his album title, “Nikao,” which means “to overcome, to prevail, to conquer.”
On his latest single, “He Never Gave Up On Me,” Nelson declares that when everyone else walked away and left him in despair, God never did, and that’s how he has prevailed.
As a voice and piano track, Nelson’s single has a demo feel, but since he also wrote the song, it could serve that purpose. Nevertheless, Nelson has a robust, textured voice well suited to his material. He grew up in the Church of Christ, where instruments were not played, so he knows what it means to be tuneful with the least amount of background possible.
