Incredible
Habakkuk Music (2012)

Jawn Murray calls Gerald Scott & Co.’s music “edgy Sunday morning.”
Nowhere is that statement truer than on “God is Good,” a track from the group’s new CD, Incredible. Scott’s duet with the melismatic Claude Deuce opens as an easy to learn praise song but keeps cooking until Scott and Deuce’s fiery duet brings it to the boiling point.
Scott told TBGB that while Incredible does not venture far from his group’s original sound, the overall feel is different as he looks to give the traditional church crowd what it wants (Biblically-based lyrics to get them through the day) while remaining youthful (urban R&B). For example, “He’Rose” is a high-energy Passion Play on words that articulates Jesus’ dying on the cross as a heroic act for his people. The current single, “Alright,” is a feel good song of encouragement that evokes the clap-along infectiousness of Fred Hammond.
The musical component may be different but it is consistent. Scott experiments within defined lines so as not to give the listener aural whiplash. For example, the title track and “No Condemnation” are hard-hitting, sweaty ensemble works with ties to John P. Kee’s 1990s workouts. “No Condemnation” benefits from Cherlita Claiborne’s evangelistic and melismatic lead vocals.
“Back With You” is an emotionally-sung ballad with pop flavoring on which Scott submits his Rapture request: “I want to go back with you when you come,” because “Heaven is the place I want to be.” A brief instrumental interlude opens and closes the track, but the track stands on its own without the interludes.
On Incredible, Gerald Scott & Co. succeeds in updating its former style with a newer vibe without losing anything in the process. By playing the middle of the field, the album maintains its focus upward without forgetting about the contemporary gospel enthusiasts on one side or the fans of an edgier urban sound on the other.
Four of Five Stars
Picks: “Alright.”
