At the outset of “I Can Depend on You,” J Shep & Standard declare that one thing is certain no matter what happens in life: “I Can Depend on God.”
The single then launches into a Deitrick Haddon-Kirk Franklin vibe with its raucous-party joy, kinetic electric power, snarling guitar, and triplet-spitting piano riffs. Most endearing about the track is its incessant drive: the talented and effusive ensemble does not let up singing its praises until the very last second.
Chicago-based J Shep (aka Jason Shepherd) is a songwriter, producer, and music director who formerly led the gospel ensemble Jason Shepherd & Another Level. “I Can Depend on You” seeps slowly into your consciousness until you jolt up: “Hey, this is good stuff!” Christian rapper God’s Writer and vocalist Carya Holmes assist.
