James A. Willis, Jr. & Nu Praze
I’ll Praise Him

If you hear a big sound coming out of Oklahoma City, it’s James Willis & Nu Praze.

On its new CD, I’ll Praise Him, the energetic mixed ensemble sings with the extroverted exuberance ushered in by James Cleveland and refined by John P. Kee. The full-throated singers benefit from rolling rhythms, booming bass lines, and deft piano work that complement their tight sound and practiced harmonies. The opening selections, “Give Him Glory” and “We Bless Your Name,” are examples of their kinetic fluidity.

In addition to the husky-voiced Willis, the group features a handful of guest soloists, including Ms. Kozetta Lucas, who teams with Willis on “You Are Worthy,” a lovely praise ballad that serves as a cool-down after the vigorous opening cuts.

The album’s title is fitting, because the first two-thirds of the CD is focused lyrically on messages of praise and worship. Towards the end, the group shifts to songs of encouragement, such as the radio-friendly “He Knows,” a slow-cooker (and the album’s highlight) about deliverance from trials. Similarly, “You Can Make It,” featuring Felecia Cudjoe, urges listeners to keep on keeping on in the face of adversity by leaning and depending on Jesus.

Another strong track on I’ll Praise Him is “Our God Reigns” because the lyrics and music match perfectly.

James A. Willis and Nu Praze are rooted firmly in the uber-popular ensemble sound, but their skillful singing places them closer to the front of the line.

Four of Five Stars

Picks: “Our God Reigns,” “He Knows.”
