The Journal of Gospel Music was saddened to hear from Dennis Bines today that Grammy-winning gospel singer and longtime background vocalist Emily “Cissy” Houston passed away today, October 7, 2024, at the age of 91. She had been in hospice when she made her transition.

In addition to giving birth to and teaching her phenomenally-talented daughter Whitney Houston how to sing, Cissy was a member of the family gospel group the Drinkard Singers, background vocalist in the Sweet Inspirations, and also had her own solo career. The Drinkard-Warrick Family of New Jersey is deserving of a full-length biography.
