“Mahalia Jackson’s big, passionate, and boundless voice is a wonder of nature that can elevate the spirit of believers and nonbelievers alike.”- Mother Jones

From a Press Release:
A little over five decades since the ‘Queen of Gospel’s’ passing and Mahalia Jackson remains the world’s most famous gospel singer. The Grammy-winning and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer who was on hand to sing before and after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s landmark “I Have A Dream” Speech at the historic March on Washington has influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Mavis Staples.

On Record Store Day, April 12, 2025, Shanachie Entertainment will release special colored vinyl editions of Moving On Up A Little Higher, which was originally issued on CD by Shanachie in 2016. It’s the definitive Mahalia collection, revealing the iconic singer’s voice in its full glory and capturing tones huge and small, stadium filling and pianissimo. There are moments of rhythmic freedom and play that will be a revelation to even her devout fans. The breath-taking and exhilarating performances featured on this album allow for a broader sense of Mahalia Jackson’s musical scope and development.

Moving On Up a Little Higher is produced by renowned gospel music scholar and award-winning author and producer Anthony Heilbut (The Gospel Sound: Good News and Bad Times and The Fan Who Knew Too Much).
