“Better Afterwhile (Live)”
Donnie McClurkin
Camdon Music (release date: October 3, 2025)
By Robert M. Marovich
With his first new music in ten years, Donnie McClurkin takes the pulse of the people by calling out: “Anybody holding on to hope? Anybody holding on to faith? Is anybody at the end of their rope?” (My guess is that he received a resounding “Yes” on all counts from the live audience.)
McClurkin and his vocalists reassure that “it’s gonna get better afterwhile.” As if we need to keep reminding ourselves, the line becomes a singalong mantra. The rhythm section matches the optimism of the sentiment with a strutting beat that keeps the energy high and confident. “Better Afterwhile” is a bracing new single from the gospel veteran.
