In the 1970s, Henry Branson, Dennis Taylor and Darrold Smith formed a vocal group called Black Sunrise. Smith shares, “We thought we were the next Delphonics or Temptations…well, you know, we had a dream, but life had something different for us.”

Henry, Dennis, Darrold are back and, with Samuel Johnson, have reformed as Unique Sounds of Praise.

Their group name and purpose may have changed but their sound has not. “He Cares” is a sweet, swaying soul ballad in the classic 70s style of the Chi-Lites and Whispers. It is Dennis’ testimony after being healed from throat cancer, and sounds as if it came off a 45 rpm record, sans scratches.

When the group chants, “I should have been dead, sleeping in my grave/But Jesus spoke to death and made him behave,” you can visualize the quartet’s choreographed moves.

Unique Sounds of Praise is from the Indianapolis, Indiana area and just signed with a label this month, so watch for more details.
