Despite the electronic intro and intermittent explosions of contemporary sounds from the musicians, “New Thang” is a drive-tempo gospel quartet song that hearkens back to wooden church call-and-response congregational singing. The song really lets its traditional slip show by the vamp, as the Canton Spirituals’ Josh Myles spars vocally with the Eternal Light Singers’ lead Ronald Broussard on the “new thang” God is doing in their lives.
The Eternal Light Singers hail from Marianna, Arkansas, and recorded their original version of “New Thang” on the 2009 album Simply Outstanding. The men are in the process of putting together their fifth album.
