“One Step Closer”
DiVine of Annapolis
From the CD One Step Closer (release date: September 20, 2022)
By Robert M. Marovich
No, it’s not a cover of the Duncanaires of Chicago’s jazzy 1963 single, but a no-holds-barred quartet pewburner by DiVine of Annapolis.
The female gospel quartet has been recording for nearly a decade, and their professionalism shows on this title track from their new album. The ladies sing enthusiastically about being “one step closer to heaven,” but the tempo makes it feel as if they are strutting to heaven.
The verses are percussive tongue-twisters, but by the vamp, the group is in full call-and-response, effortlessly navigating their way upward. Dynamic.
