Mervin Mayo, the Richmond, Virginia, policeman whose gospel singing was caught on video in 2020 and subsequently went viral, sings “In This Place” with a gritty and instantly-compelling R&B-style vocal delivery.
What’s most impressive about the single is Mayo’s almost seductive sense of pacing, evoking Teddy Pendergrass at his most convincing. Mayo declares each lyric line with a gravitas that grabs the listener by the shirt collar and drags him to the altar of salvation.
