“God Said He Would Heal the Land”
Cherry and Family
Independent (release date: October 20, 2023)
By Robert M. Marovich
Cherry Fondren pays homage to her service in Chicago’s Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church music department by punching up the evergreen “God Said He Would Heal the Land,” written by Rev. Milton Biggham and recorded in 1984 by Rev. Dr. Clay Evans and the Fellowship Choir.
The optimistic song about the coming of better days bounces along to an appropriately jaunty arrangement that is contemporary on its surface, but when the blues notes peek out, we’re reminded that the song has Fellowship Choir provenance. Why the cover has a parental advisory warning is beyond me, though.
Gospel enthusiasts will know Cherry from the youth choir she formed for the annual AARC Convention that became the successful recording artist Joshua’s Troop.

This is an excellent remake of a classic.
