“Ain’t Nothin’ But a Cloud,” by singer-songwriter and drummer Mariah Hlatywayo (pron. lutch-why-oh) of Sri Lanka but now living in Perth, Western Australia, is a delightful selection from the opening flourish of organ to its smart chord sequences, rap interlude, and abrupt finale.

To punchy blasts of brass and a jazzy rhythm section, Mariah employs the dark cloud metaphor to demonstrate how tough times are just tests of our faith. Her coquettish voice is ideal for such a sassy song. Perth soul vocalist and rapper Drea makes a cameo appearance.

Mariah Hlatywayo brings to the single her jazz education at the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts and her exposure to gospel and worship music. They’re all there in the grooves.
