Opening with a sweetly warbling organ, “Measure of a Man” is Chicagoland-based Deacon J’s (aka singer-songwriter Dennis Jackson’s) “anthem of accountability” for adult males. “Help me push temptation away” is its recurring message.

Its lyrics evoke Eddie Robinson’s 1974 “Reflections of the Man Inside,” while its melody and arrangement hearken back to contemporary crossover gospel a la Andrae’ Crouch.

Though the single’s introduction could be shortened by half, COMMUNION’s harmonies are smooth, the production is uncomplicated, and Jackson’s lead vocals are as earnest as the theme.
