“He Worked It Out”

Debbie Orange’s churchy “He Worked It Out” could easily be the sequel to the Christian Tabernacle Concert Choir’s classic “Jesus Can Work It Out.”

The Chicago-based singer, who studied the techniques of Mahalia Jackson and Albertina Walker, sings, shouts and growls in front of the St. John MB Church choir, which moves at joyous Sunday testimony service tempo.

“He Worked It Out” is from Orange’s live CD, produced by Minister Sherwin “Butch” Yancy, whose mother is the great Chicago singer, Ann Yancy. Among the choir directors featured on the CD is Chedwick Allan Cathey, musical director for the Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer Warriors, whose cover of “Jesus Can Work It Out” is best known for lead singer Dianne Williams’ unplanned but now legendary vamp. So any similarities musically are not necessarily coincidental in the creation of this quintessentially Chicago church choir workout.
